The Center for European Studies Receives NEH Grant to Work with Veterans
The Center for European Studies (CES) received a large grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities entitled Dialogues on the Experience of War (DEW). DEW supports the study and discussion of important humanities sources about war in the belief that these sources can help U.S. military veterans and others to think more deeply about the issues raised by war and military service.
The grant program includes a graduate seminar to begin in the Fall 2016 semester, "Humanities & War," dedicated to exploring war through humanities sources. CES encourages graduate students who are themselves veterans to enroll in this class and are hoping to attract veterans from all branches of military service.
Beginning in the Spring 2017, CES will host discussion groups with local veterans around a series of themes related to the experience of war and based on various humanities sources - literature, film, photography, etc. All necessary materials will be provided to the participants free of charge.
The Center for European Studies (CES) at the University of Florida is an interdisciplinary area studies center focused on the study of Europe, and facilitating the training of scholars and experts in European studies in the United States. CES is a hub for humanities research, university collaboration and outreach, working to educate university audiences, the K-12 community, the broader public and state agencies about Europe and contemporary European issues. CES aims to serve the community in a concrete fashion by providing meaningful and intelligent commentary on the social, political, and economic issues that Europe faces in today’s world and to address the ways in which these issues play out on the global stage.
