Making Screenshots

Screenshots must be made differently depending on the system that you are using. Making screenshots is very easy, but it can be confusing to figure out how, especially when switching platforms. The pages below have instructions for each platform in the IMAGE Lab.

Screenshots on UNIX

Screenshots on Macintosh

Hold the keys: Apple+Shift+4
The cursor will change, click and drag the cursor over the area of the screen to be captured. This places the screen capture in a file.

Hold the keys: Apple+Shift+3
This takes a capture of the entire screen and creates an image file.

Hold the keys: Apple+Shift+3+Capslock
This captures the window and creates an image file.

To place the screen capture on the clipboard instead of creating a file, hold the Control key while holding the other keys above.

Screenshots on Windows

Hold the keys: Control+PrintScreen
This places the screen capture in the clipboard. Next, open a graphics program, select a new file, and select paste.
