The iMovie Interface

Main iMovie Screen
full iMovie screen The image on the left shows the parts of the main iMovie screen. Below, there are clearer images of each part and an explanation of what their functions.

The iMovie Monitor (the main viewing window)
iMovie Clip Shelf

The Main Window is where you will view you clips and preview your movie. You will also use the bottom scrubber bar of the main window to crop bits of footage. The scrubber bar is the blue bar underneath where the video plays and above the play, stop, fastforward, and rewind buttons, and above the volume control. The scrubber bar shows where the clips begin and end and allows you to select portions of clips to crop by dragging beneath the scrubber bar. The white triangular arrow on top of the scrubberbar is the playhead. The playhead allows you to select a place for splitting video and for you and shows you the progress of the video when you play video within the iMovie Monitor.

Also in the iMovie monitor is the Mode Switch, which controls camera mode for playing back video from a camera before importing that footage. To be in camera mode, the mode switch needs to be pushed to the left with the camera icon. In the image to the left, the mode switch is pushed to the right, which is used for working with the videos in iMovie. Camera mode is only used for importing video from a camera and previewing that footage. If you switch to camera mode and the camera is not connected, you will get a warning that the camera is not connected.

The Clip Shelf
iMovie Clip Shelf The iMovie Clip Shelf is where you store your clips before assembling them into a full movie. To add clips to your movie, you'll need to drag them from the clip shelf and into the clip viewer. By selecting the other options at the bottom of the clip shelf, like transitions, effects, title, and audio.

The Clip Viewer
iMovie Clip Viewer The clip viewer goes along the bottom of the main iMovie interface. The clip viewer allows you to see the collection of clips. The clip viewer is also the timeline - depending on which button is selected on the left side of the clip viewer.
