Freehand: Symbols

Like many of the other Macromedia programs, Freehand allows you to use Libraries to store Symbols. Libraries are particularly useful for the Macromedia programs because they can be transferred back and forth. For more information, see our section about Libraries in the IMAGE lab's Flash help.

With Freehand, symbols become most useful as a way to keep from having to repeat items. Below are some details about symbols.

Painting with symbols in Freehand

When you have added a symbol to your library with Freehand, you can use that symbol as a "brush." Using sybols as brushes allows you to pattern your document quite easily.

Monster

For example, our monster above would look much better if he had a row of spikes here or there. Rather than draw in all those spikes, we made a spike brush, added it to our library, and painted the monster accordingly (see below).
