When you first open Fireworks, it opens on a blank screen. From this
point you can create a new image or open an already-existing one. You
can make a new image by selecting the File menu and choosing
"New."
The new image dialog (right) will open, giving you the ability to
set a few properties for your image. You may set:
- Width - how many pixels the horizontal side of the image has.
- Height - how many pixels the vertical side of the image has.
- Resolution - how detailed the rendering of the image will be (we suggest you leave this at 72)
- Canvas Color - the background color for your image
- Save an image
- To save a Fireworks image, choose the "File" menu and select
"Save." The save dialog window will open, and you will be asked to
enter the name of your file. Be sure to choose your network space
(either "H" or "I" on the IBM intellistations).
Note: saving your
image and exporting your image are different things. When you
save your image, it is saved in a beefy .png file. When you export
your image, you will want to use the much smaller .jpg, .gif, or small
.png formats.
Tips for naming your files
- Don't put spaces in the filename; use hyphens or underscores instead.
- If you just type the name of the image, Fireworks will
automatically add the .png file extension. For instance, if you type
wombat as your filename, Fireworks will use
wombat.png as the file name.
When you've chosen your file name, press Enter.
- Close an image
- To close a Fireworks image, select the "File" menu and choose "Close."
