Trasfer files with Fetch

Now that you have successfully connected to another system, you can use Fetch to transfer files back and forth between the computer you are using and the remote system.

The screen shot above shows a standard Fetch window. You should see a window very similar to this when you connect to the remote system. Of course, this window has the main features of any MacOS window (close, resize, etc) but more are added. Let's go over some of the information this window tells you about your ftp session:

item location
host name menu bar title
directory name pop-up menu
status right side of screen
file list left side of screen
transfer type bottom radio buttons

We've got a graphic that puts all that into writing. Er, out of writing.

Consider this window just like the other windows on your computer. You can drag files to and from this window. You can select more than one file with "shift." Of course, some of these operations may take a little longer than others -- downloading over a modem isn't the same as copying or saving a file.

To upload a file, press the "Put File" button, find the file in the pop-up menu that comes up, and press return. Alternately, you can drag the file icon from your computer to the Fetch window.

To download a file, select the file in the Fetch window and press the "Get File" button. Alternately, you can drag the file name from the Fetch window to your computer.

If at any time Fetch asks you about the file transfer type for uploading or downloading, your best bet is selecting "binary." However, you can select text (ASCII) in certain circumstances. See the NWE binary vs. ASCII page for help.

When files are transferring, you'll see a little dog running along fetching your file like a dutiful canine should. (Note that the dog runs one way for upload, and the other for download.) At this time Fetch also displays a nifty status indicator pie chart and estimated time needed to download the file. These estimates are usually fairly accurate.

After a transfer is finished, Fetch should beep at you. If you've just uploaded a web page, why not open a browser and make sure it works OK?
