The IMAGE Lab offers a number of computing platforms for different applications and for comparative use. See the other IMAGE Lab and NWE Pages for more specific information; these are meant as simply a reference for switching between platforms.
The SUN machines in the IMAGE Lab run UNIX (or specifically SOLARIS, a flavor of UNIX). On these, the mouse has three buttons. To copy and paste, select the text you want to copy with the left mouse button and, with it highlighted, click with the middle mouse button to paste. In UNIX, each program has its own program bar. The bottom IMAGELAB or NWE menu allows you to open programs and then each program will have a menu that is separate from the IMAGE LAB or NWE menu.
To use a floppy disc or CD on the UNIX machines:
volcheckwill find and mount a disc
/floppy/floppy0is the default mount point
eject floppyunmounts the diskette
THIS IS REQUIRED despite there being a button on the floppy drive.
If you don't see your floppy in /floppy/floppy0/ then run eject floppy and volcheck again since the previous floppy probably wasn't unmounted properly.
CDs are the same, substitute cdrom for floppy everywhere.
With the Mac, there are two important differences with other systems. The first is the top bar and the second is the mouse. In the Mac interface the top bar directly relates to the program in use. That means that if you open Fireworks, the File Menu on the left relates to Fireworks. If you aren't sure what program you're in, use the Finder on the top right. You can choose which programs to hide and which ones to show, so you'll know what program you're in.
For the mouse, Macs only have one mouse button. To use the mouse button as a right-click, hold the Command Key (the one with the Apple on it) while clicking the mouse. To cancel a program that is not responding, hold Command+Option+Escape. The F keys can also help:
| Helpful Function Keys | |
|---|---|
| F1 | Undo |
| F2 | Cut |
| F3 | Copy |
| F4 | Paste |
Most people are familiar with Windows, but here are some notes to remember. The mouse has two buttons. The first selects and does the major operations; the second brings up alternative options, like Open With, Cut, and Paste. To cancel a program that isn't responding, you can use Ctrl+Alt+Del. In Windows, each program has its own program bar. The bottom start menu allows you to open programs and then each program will have a menu that is separate from the start menu.
