IMAGE Lab: Saving data to the network from Macintosh PCs

Saving data to the network from Macintosh PCs is a slightly more-involved process than it is on the Windows PCs. In part, this is because when you log in to a Windows PC, your drives are "mounted" automatically. When you log into a Macintosh, on the other hand, you need to "mount" the drives yourself.

Mounting your "H" or "I" drives

To add your "H" drive or your "I" drive to the desktop, follow these steps:

For your I drive:

  1. Click the leafless tree icon in the upper right part of your screen.
  2. Choose "Log in..."
  3. Enter your Novell Netware username and password. You will know you've logged in correctly when the tree icon changes from leafless to leafy.
  4. Click the apple icon in the upper left of the screen and select Chooser from the pop-down menu.
  5. Double-click "Netware" and make sure the window to the right loads with choices.
  6. Click through the progression below:

    CLAS_TREE UFL AA CLAS CLASDATA
  7. At this point, you should have about four choices in the right-hand window. To load your "H" drive, skip to the next step. To load your "I" drive, click "WEB" and then click "Mount."
  8. The drive you mounted should be on your desktop now. Double click the mounted drive. Then, double click Users (this will take a while to load - so don't worry if you don't see your name at first). Finally, double click your name from the list. Now you can drag and drop files here to put them on your I drive, which automatically puts them online.

For your H drive:

  1. Your H drive is set up a little bit differently. For it, you'll open the Chooser.
  2. Then click on Netware Files.
  3. On the right side, choose "bindery".
  4. Find the CLASDATA server in the server list and click on it.
  5. If you haven't already logged in to the Novell Server, you'll be prompted to do so now.
  6. A list of options will come up, double click HOME. The HOME folder will appear on your desktop.
  7. Open it and double click user.
  8. Then, find your department in the list (you may be at the bottom of the window and so you may need to scroll up to see your departments).
  9. Double click your department and then find your name to access your H drive space.
Saving to your "H" drive

To save documents to your "H" drive, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you've mounted your "H" drive (it will be an icon of a filing cabinet on your desktop). Double-click it.
  2. Click through the progression below (substituting your department and username):

    USERS DEPARTMENT USERNAME
  3. Save your documents in your "H" drive.

Saving to your "I" drive

To save documents to your "I" drive, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you've mounted your "I" drive (it will be an icon of a filing cabinet on your desktop). Double-click it (opening your "I" drive will take a LONG time).
  2. Once all the folders have appeared, click through the progression below (substituting your username):

    WEB USERS username
  3. Save your documents in your "I" drive.

Saving documents to the UNIX file space

To save documents to the UNIX file space, you need to use an FTP program, like Fetch.

NOTE: When you are finished using your "H" and "I" drives, be sure to log out by clicking on the leafy-tree icon in the upper right of your screen and selecting "Log out completely."
