Macintosh sound controls

The Macintosh sound controls appear in two places: in the control strip at the lower left-hand side of the screen (usually), and as their own control panel.

  1. Find the control strip at the lower left-hand side of the screen. Click the tab to open it.

    You may need to activate the control strip. To do so, click the Apple menu (upper left corner), select Control Panels, then select Control Strip. This will open the Control Strip panel.

  2. Click the speaker icon once.

  3. The volume control will appear just above the icon.

Using the sound control

Volume
To control the volume for the built-in speakers, use the mouse to slide the volume bar up or down.

Balance
Balance and a variety of other controls are available on the sound control panel. To access the sound control panel, double-click the speaker icon in the tray. The sound control panel will open.

Alternately, you may open the Apple Menu (upper left corner), select Control Panels and then select Sound.

Mute
Mute and a variety of other controls are available on the sound control panel. To access the sound control panel, double-click the speaker icon in the tray. The sound control panel will open.
